The Friends of St. Peter & St. Paul

The congregation thanks the Friends for the gift of a new sound system for the Parish church

The Friends are a group of people who appreciate the importance of the Parish Church building to the community and who want to conserve it for the enjoyment of future generations.  They recognise that maintaining this ancient, iconic and beautiful Grade 1 listed structure is a mammoth task for the local congregation and so they want to play a full part in supporting this ongoing work.

The Friends of St Peter and St Paul is a registered charity and all funds raised are directed towards the upkeep and enhancement of the building itself.

Membership is open to all, churchgoer or not, regardless of denomination or religious background.  Some of our members live far from Godalming but have family or other ties with the parish.  Some merely come to the church as visitors and have felt inspired to help us with the continuation of our work.

Money is raised through subscriptions and events such as concerts. The Friends of St Peter and St Paul produces an annual Christmas card that is now much sought after throughout the town.  Members receive a periodic newsletter which gives details of forthcoming events and information on how the funds are being distributed.

Since the Friends of St Peter and St Paul was established in 2000, contributions to the church have included:

  • Provision of a tierce pipe for the rebuilt organ
  • Provision of a display case for the ancient Saxon stones
  • A donation to the fund for rebuilding the access to the Octagon
  • Provision of a new altar frontal
  • Provision of a new oil stock
  • Assistance with funding the strengthening of the bell tower
  • Provision of a wrought iron gate at rear (Octagon) entrance
  • Assistance with the cost of rehanging the bells and acoustic work in the tower
  • Repairs to the exterior stonework of the church
  • Repairs to the belfry door surround
  • Provision of a finial
  • Provision of a new sound system

In September 2014, an art exhibition is planned to coincide with the Godalming heritage weekend.

Members are asked to make a subscription of at least £10 per annum (single) or £15 (family).  Life membership is available for £100 (single) or £150 (family).  Applications for membership should be made to the Parish Office, or to the Membership Secretary on 01483 421107.
